Alan Lewis of Zuni Pueblo was born in Winslow, Arizona to the late Robert E. and Virginia Lewis. His parents were silversmiths and his mother also did beadwork. He is the youngest child.

Alan began carving in the mid 1980's, starting off with materials such as alabaster, jet, and marble. He made animal fetishes and small sculptures, often inlaying heartlines on his animal carvings using various precious stones.

In 1995 Alan began experimenting with wood, particularly cottonwood to create his carvings. The dragonfly, rain and cloud symbols adorn his various maiden pieces. His corn maiden hairstyles vary from straight, traditional whorl buns, and the pueblo 'chunga' bun. More recently, he's added paint and stone inlay to his maiden works. And lately, his sculpture pieces have incorporated the traditional Zuni baking ovens because of the wonderful bread and foods that are cooked within them. He inlays windows and doors with turquoise and shell.

Alan's artwork is constantly changing and his pieces are one of a kind.
