Here are Kateri's eloquent words on this marvelous two-sided turquoise corn maiden carving: 'This piece represents the sisters who long ago saved the Zuni People from a time of severe drought and famine by feeding them the kernels of their bodies. They were soon forgotten and neglected about and made a decision to leave the pueblo. Once the Zunis discovered the maidens had left they sought them out. Upon finding the maidens they begged for the sisters to return. However, they said they would not do so unless they were promised to be cared for and never neglected again. They were promised this and did return to Zuni. To this day, corn is highly regarded as sacred and used in many prayers and rituals by the Zuni People.'
