Les' hand coiled and hand painted polychrome clay jar is best described in his own words:
"This Zuni polychrome jar is untitled. It is based on Zuni polychrome designs from the late 1800's to very early 1900's. (1870-1900, to be more precise). The upper area of design represent stepped-cloud formations with crooked feathers or prayer symbols. A stylized bird symbol, black triangle with eye, is also part of the design.
The lower portion of jar is designed with "capped" spirals and two rosette patterns. These are consistent with designs during that time period of Zuni pottery. The spirals represent symbolic prayer feather motifs while the rosettes usually represented sunflower designs. There is also a central band that divides this lower area of design. This band emulates the stepped-cloud formations represented in the upper portion of the jar.
As to the overall creation of the piece, my motivation was to create a "relic" Zuni jar which had the vibe of those older examples of pottery. But in doing so, I also wanted to include contemporary uniqueness to the jar. Therefore, I painted the two rosettes using abstract negative space and linear and circular patterns to replace the usual floral patterns that are present on jars of this type. I suppose the message is that, what might appear to look like the past is actually very modern."
We're honored to offer this awesome collector's piece! Les said this jar is the first in a series of work which he'll be exploring throughout this year. Approximately 10 3/4" in diameter and 8 3/4" tall. Extra shipping charges will apply due to fragility. - $4000.00
